Composing Revised Field Notes Blog (Due by 11:59pm on Mar. 17)

Composing "Revised" Field Notes:

You should have your "raw" field notes from at least one field site visit, (remember, you need at least five field site visits before Apr. 11th) and now it is time to take the next step and convert those raw field notes into revised narrative form. Using your initial observations and comments/reactions from one field site visit, as a basis to expand and embellish in terms of vividness, scenic description, character development, details, and complexity, write a narrative  of 300-800 words.

Directions:

*Convert your raw field notes into a narrative of between 300-800 words.
*Write in present tense--as if the event is happening right now as you are writing it and your audience is reading it.
*This is a first revision, so I am not overly strict about punctuation and grammar unless it impedes reader comprehension.
*Have a title for the revised version--be creative

They Started Throwing Shoes:
Notes on a Joint Meeting of Young Democrats and Republicans
This is where you actually begin writing your revised notes. Be sure to use proper formatting as referenced above. Be sure to generate logical paragraph breaks in your narrative and complete a spell check before loading your narrative to the blog.

Don't think of this as something you will be sending to The New Yorker. What I want to see is a solidly written narrative (story telling) version of your raw field notes. So long as the sentences are complete, comprehensible, and represent an earnest attempt to recreate accurately your impressions, then you are in the ball park. Sloppy, hasty, and partially complete work will result in commensurate grade compensation for this blog posting.

"Go to H-E Double Hockey sticks!"
The first thing I'm noticing is the smell of the building. It's still a building yet it has a particular smell to it. I guess that the perfect description I could have would be musky. Yes, this basketball court with its various lines for opposing sides has a musky smell to it. It smells like testosterone and violence and the tension between opposing teams is instantly noticeable. The makeshift hockey court is small in comparison to an average hockey rink and apparently I'm not the only one noticing that. Two players on the court are also discussing this. I can shoot it from side to the other with a simple wrist shot. Yeah, it's way too small of a court. Their exchange has some hockey jargon in it, but having played ice hockey for many years I completely understand and agree with what they're saying. There must be an old rivalry between two of the other players on the court, because one is giving the other "the thousand yard stare". I cant describe how awkward the sport is. It's meant to fast paced and physical and also should take a high amount of skill to play. However when the game actually starts it's just a cluster of clattering sticks, bodies flailing around, and the puck is always rolling. I can almost feel the players pain as the puck refuses to lie flat on the ice. Having gotten my hands on a puck before the game, I know that their hollow and have no weight in them, therefore making it easy for them to roll and never settle on the court. The first period ends with the buzzer from the digital score clock. I'm honestly surprised that they have an audio system to go with the clock as those are highly expensive. Following the end of the period the teams meet on their respective sides of the court where the captains speak their minds about the game. "The ref is doing a shitty job at calling anything, he hasn't called a single high stick on the other team." "Someone is gonna get hurt if their not careful, they need to call that shit fair." The refs are talking to the score keepers about how long their shift is and are ignoring the other captain talking about lack of penalties despite being less than ten feet away. It seems no mater what sport it is, the refs always suck and the players always pay the price. The fans in the stands are few and far between, but those who are, are mostly females and other teams. Maybe the girls boyfriends are playing or perhaps the girls league is taking place after these games. As the game eventually comes to a close after a player gets injured from, you guessed it, high sticking, the players meet in the middle of the court shaking hands as a show of good sportsmanship. Despite winning with the score of 5 -1 the winning team initiates the handshake which surprised me. I didn't expect such restraint to not celebrate the win before shaking hands, but it's a pleasant surprise rather an unwanted one.

“Observing what the IMO is about”
I walk in and the room is open and full of students. There are 8 representatives standing in the front dressed in black. Two formally dressed speakers from the crowd are heading to the front to speak. They’re very detailed in their explanation of their credentials and the club. The two speakers seem to be plat forming for an office in the SGA. Now, the president of the organization, Nathalie, is leading the discussion. She‘s talking about applications to the Haiti trip. She is stating important dates for activities and meetings. She is very engaged and uses her hands and tone of voice effectively. I think she’s a born leader and has experience in this type of position. The attention shifts to one of the representatives who is talking about what they’re doing after the meeting. Another one of the representatives is talking about the different types of fundraisers the club is having. The next meeting is at 6:30 pm on 3/17/14. Another representative starts taking about health training meetings which are on Thursdays. The purpose of those meeting is to train members to help in the clinics when they go on trips. All representatives are engaged in this meeting. 10 people from the crowd that went to Nicaragua (the last trip) get up and go to the front of the room. They seem very excited and they received two round of applauses from the crowd. They’re each sharing stories from the trip. One of the representatives is sharing a video from her phone. They seem to be all positively influenced by this trip. There seems to be a lot of inside jokes between them. All their stories seem to revolve around the themes of friendship, kindness towards fellow man, curiosity, and thankfulness. A lot of their experiences involve actual medical experiences (i.e. severed tendons, torn eyelids, live births, etc.). Only 3/10 of the students are male. This could just be by chance or because girls are more caring and willing to help than guys are, generally speaking. They’re very enthusiastic in telling their stories. They’re also very thorough so that you can feel that you’re actually there. The student trip coordinator just started talking. He’s speaking about a local trip for members that don’t get to go to Haiti. This will be in New Orleans and is centered on education instead of medical help like in Haiti. Now, another one of the representatives is talking about a trip giveaway raffle. Each ticket costs $20 and you can buy any number of tickets. I think that this organization is very creative in finding ways to fundraise. A guest speaker Jeff McMahon, is talking now. He is a current medical student that was formerly an IMO vice president during his time at UCF. He’s going to talk about where he is now and how IMO affected his progress. He goes to Jefferson medical school in Philly and is going to graduate in May for ophthalmology. He’s talking about the personal development, medic al knowledge base, and cultural awareness that he gained through his time in IMO. He’s showing pictures of his experiences, including some in the ER. Now he’s talking about hazards to our health in IMO which basically means things that members should avoid to do while on trips. “Medical tourism,” “sustainability,” and “being an ambassador.” The first term means that we should treat patients with dignity and respect and not like a school project. The second term means that we should gain as much knowledge on the trips as possible while being respectful at the same time. The third term means that we need to represent UCF while going to another country and should avoid making our school look bad. He changed the subject to med school. He’s talking about ways that help getting in: good grades, MCAT, research, IMO. He’s now talking about his experience in med school and is answering question. He’s done with the presentation and now they’re closing and reminding us of future events.

    “Becoming Best Buddies”
The room is busy, it is bustling, and there are always people walking in and walking out of the room. There is a wave of happiness that lines the room, and anyone who walks in feels welcome. The best buddies program aims to help students with disabilities in campus, and in everyday life. That is a cause that is near to my heart, and I am so honored they have allowed me to observe. In this room, there are people who are coming up with ideas on how to spread the word and bring awareness that people with disabilities are people, and they do have feelings. The wonderful workers in this room, most of who are volunteers, are speaking about their tabling session they did about a week ago and how big of a success it was in bringing a very important issue to light. They were tabling for national spread the word to end the word day, this one girl was telling me. She went on to explain that they were asking people for signatures in order to give a self-pledge to not use the “R-word” when referring to those with disabilities. I began to think about it, and got overjoyed because the people working in this room are giving the people with disabilities on campus a safer environment, they are giving them peace of mind. It is an incredible experience to just sit in this office and listen to how much these people really do care, and how they are willing to give so much of their time to help make someone else’s day better. The fact that the people in this room welcome anyone who wants to learn about and spread their cause just makes them an even more incredible organization. I have experience working with people with disabilities and trying to stop people from not saying the “R-word” but the large scale that they use creates so many opportunities for the people whose lives they are really changing. As I sit here, I think this may be somewhere I want to come back to and experience again, and to learn more from these incredible workers and volunteers, because they have so much to offer this campus.

    “Something seems fishy”
Upon my arrival to the scuba diving club of UCF my entire image of those who scuba dived changed immediately. To start off with everyone in the room seemed to be in immaculate shape compared to myself. I sat there and started to wonder if I would be able to scuba dive and for some unknown reason I started to feel my hands get clammy and just the thought about throwing myself underwater to face the depths of the ocean had my stomach a little at ease. One the peers of the club started to discuss recent dives I was so fascinated with their recent explorations, their stories consisted of the simple we went down and came back up, to the extraordinary where they were in the Bahamas swimming with some ferocious creatures. By now I still was a little nervous to be sitting their but the group was very accepting and instead of leaving me to feel like an outsider they all opened up to me and gave me what I felt was a true to heart answer when I asked personal questions such as what they felt scuba diving has brought to their lives. The answers I got where out of this world, these young adults are absolutely amazing. They all shared the same answer about how scuba diving has not only brought them a whole new group of friends who share their passion but how scuba diving has brought them peace. At this young age many are quick to say we young adults should not be stressed out but the truth of the matter is that we are, and for these people to have already found out a life long way for themselves to be at peace it was truly inspirational. Once it was time for me to leave I felt that just sitting in a room filled with such positive vibes had left me feeling somewhat joyful and happy. The scuba diving club of UCF may smell and have a weird lingo I have to work on but they truly are some of the most genuine people.

    UCF Arena
    Young Life
    Meeting at Basketball Game

    Houston, You Have a Problem:
Notes on a Meeting of Young Life

I start skating over to the Arena, it’s now 6:30pm and I got an email from Jeff (the leader of Young Life) that everyone is going to meet at the front of the arena. As I round the corner to the front of the arena, I see an enormous crowd and begin to think that finding Jeff is going to be difficult.
    “Yo Adrian!”
Or not I think as I see Jeff yelling my name, waving at me from under the pavilion. I join up with the group; there are about 7 other people. Kayla is a member of the Volleyball team at UCF, Kenan a freshman here at UCF who’s majoring in International Business, Jeanine the junior, Chris, Luke, Mike and Taylor. Mike and Taylor are both sophomores and have been dating since their senior year of high school, while Chris and Luke have been best buds since they were kids.
I realize that I’m most definitely the odd man out since everyone pretty much knows everybody else, so they focus on me to get to know me better. I’m surprised that everyone wants to speak to me since no one knows who I am, if this were my friends, they would have left that kid out until he got caught up with the rest of the group’s conversation.
“So Adrian, where are you from?” Asks Kenan
God this is always confusing to explain, should I just tell them that I’m from Boca? Forget about the Peru part? Yeah, no one’s going to really care about that. “I’m from Boca, it’s an hour from Miami.”
They all begin to talk about how much they love Miami and they’d rather be there than up here. They don’t know the real Miami though, which is basically full on crazy. After they’re done interviewing me (which is funny because it’s supposed to be the other way around) we all walk into the stadium and get to our seats, which is somewhere in the middle row. Just on time too, the game is about to start. I feel good about meeting with this group, they seem to know how to have fun, not many of my friends are into basketball. I look forward towards the game and towards meeting with this group again next week.

    “Back That Pass Up”
In this essay my field report will be based on the things I noticed in the intramural football league here at UCF. When arriving at the fields for the first time I notice that the fields were exceptionally large, but that did not surprise me about this location. I was astonished that the entire grass area composing somewhere between six to eight football fields was made entirely out of artificial turf. In high school I participated on the football team for all four years I was attending, and had played on turf fields before. However artificial turf is rather expensive and the only times that I remember playing on these fields is when we traveled to private institutions. This is why I had not anticipated UCF to have these at their facilities. I also noticed that the whole organization was run by students which would make the league somewhat unorganized at times. Several games were started later than their scheduled time due to the fact that the students running the league were not familiar with ever running an organization in the past. Every game that I have attended at least one team has had an issue with one of their players, for example the paper that the officials have say whether they are ineligible or not, but when they call the office they are fine to play. This is one of the many reasons a game will be delayed and can throw off the entire scheduling for the night. One more thing that I noticed was that most of the officials have never refereed a game of football before, and were most likely taught the large rulebook in a three credit hour class, as opposed to being an actual football fan that would know the game better than most. All in all I have much more to observe from this league and will be looking forward to it. I can already tell that this is going to be an enjoyable season and I will most likely be participating every semester until I graduate.

    "Beginning My Studies"
Reddit is a pretty interesting website, and could be considered a community is some sense of the word. It’s one of the very few places you can go from looking at pictures of large breasted women to watching kittens play in clean laundry in a matter of a few scrolls. But Reddit is not solely about dirty images and cats (although admittedly it feels that way sometimes), there are literally hundreds of smaller “sub-reddits” with very serious subjects ranging law practices to self-improvement. One such sub-reddit (or Sub as I will be referring to them) is r/Buddhism, and it is exactly what you are thinking; a Sub for the teachings of Buddhism.
Growing up in the United States means that I have a very limited knowledge of Buddhism’s innermost workings, however my first time just looking at the Sub gave me some immediate observable clues about what it’s all about. One of the first things I looked at was the Subs rules on posting content, or rather the lack there of any real rules. What was posted in the rule section said “Here are some suggestions to get thoughtful responses” which may not be something that strikes someone else as odd. But having been a Redditer for several years now, I have dealt with my share of internet trolls, and know from having run my own Sub at one time just how hard it can be to keep users in line without strict rules.
Something else that really leads me to some conclusions was the flair system used on this Sub. A flair is like a user’s “tag” denoting to whom or what they belong (Similar to seeing someone wearing a certain attire and putting them in a group of people). Some of the suggested flairs really surprised me with their diversity (I myself made my own flair sporting “Student Researcher”). I saw several users sporting “Christian Buddhist” or “Secular” flairs, suggesting a religious connotation to Buddhism. This something I would like to dig a bit deeper into because of my previous experiences with Buddhists in the modern world. Several people I have met who are Buddhists couldn’t answer the only real question I had for them concerning the matter. Is Buddhism a religion or a philosophy? You might be surprised how tricky a question that is. The question itself might be a good one to use in a survey of the Sub.
The last thing I’d like to talk about is a post that I started to read, the title read as follows: “Thoughts about Fred Phelps?” For anyone who doesn’t know, Fred Phelps was/is the leader and founder of the Westboro Baptist Church and is currently on his death bed. I had read already several other similar posts in many other Subs on Reddit that day so I had a fairly good idea of what the majority of the sites users (myself included) felt towards the subject presented. But what I saw on r/Buddhism almost irritated (disturbed you could say) me to some point. Many of the users posted comments along the lines of feeling compassion for the man, someone that would very well spit on their graves if not for the waste of breath.

    Election Day:

It was a fairly well lit room with nice seats and modern day looking interior. So the organization must be pretty popular. For the most part it seemed pretty full. Which tells me that the members are very much involved. I chose to sift in the back (mostly so I wouldn’t be expected to be involved in the discussions and would not distract anyone by my typing and any lazing). But I can clearly see and hear everything that is going on. They started out by going over topics that they had at the last meeting. For the most part it seemed that they discussed opportunities. Like how if you wanted to you could schedule a tour of the college of nursing, and if you felt the need to be even more hands on how you could schedule to do some of the computer simulations they do for clinical practice. The most interesting one is one that seemed to be of a human body and you literally type in steps that you take in order to find a prognosis for the situation. Today was election day for the organization so like how most elections work everyone who had submitted a little blurb about why they wanted which position began to speak about why they wanted the certain position they wanted and how the organization would benefit by choosing them to be elected this position. Half way through the treasury speeches I lost focus but when the president came around it was regained. Everyone seemed well planned and all I could think of is how can they have enough time for this! Nursing is a life sucker! But the way it was done was by ballot and the ballots where read and from the speeches to who got the positions I was pleased.

    "A New Adventure"
All these faces glowing with anticipation. Palms of hands sweaty not knowing what awaits them in the coming months. Boxes and appliances going in every direction. Boys checking out the new girls and the girls exchanging looks with the boy who walked in the door. A newly found freedom found in every individual. Move in day is an exciting experience for the new incoming freshman. Contrary to what you would think the move in process was very efficient people coming in signing their papers and leaving to move in to their new homes. Going into move in you expect to be alone and spend the first few nights by yourself. This isn't the case though. There are helpers everywhere from big fraternity guys helping someone carry a microwave to a new students room, to the RA's passing out flyers advertising the movie night that is to be held at the courtyard. You would think that this was all run by adults, but its actually all students contributing to the well oiled Resident hall machine. But this is just the beginning for this community center. On a daily bases you have students coming in with work orders or who have been locked out of their apartment. The people who are running this center are constantly working to enhance the residents experience. I look forward to learning more about this center and the people who run it.

      Gray Hill’s House
“What am I doing here?” Notes of my first bible study:
What am I doing here? Am I here for a school paper or am I here to learn a little bit more about god and the bible. The answer is probably both. For background, my friend Gray always holds a bible study weekly at his house ether Wednesday or Thursday. I never considered myself to a religious person as I only went to church on Christmas and Easter. With limited Knowledge of Bible/Christianity entering this group I felt like I didn’t do my homework.
My first bible study started wonderfully as I didn’t state my intentions of documenting my interactions for the sake of this paper. Felt strong amount of guilt. I let that past me and I observed peoples arrivals. There was roughly I’d say three waves of people. First wave arrived approximately 15-20 minutes early. Those people I was probably introduced. Small talk till the later waves arrived, asked simple questions such as age, what school I was attending, and major. Second wave arrived 5 minutes till start time, whom consisted most of the group. Third wave about 10 minutes after. The group consisted of 11 excluding me, all male. This disturbed me, I plan to ask my friend next session why all male? The session didn’t truly start till 6:20, it began of course with the new guy, me. Went around in this informal circle made in the living room couches. Greetings and First Names, were given. All of people were significantly older then I. Youngest appeared about the age of 25, while the rest I’d put late 20’s early 30’s. The biblical material of the session was on the sections of the prophet John.
I was distracted as I was more focused on the people’s behaviors. As I believe the people’s behaviors make up the community. Strait across the room one of the older gentlemen was staring at me. I put that off to that I was the only one writing in the room, but I could read his facial expression. What are you doing here? This set me to realize that atmosphere of the room. That I was clearly the odd one out. I knew this as I was entering a well-established group that has been going on for 2+ years. As the session went on we became on off topic discussion, about the missing plane off Malaysia. Which brought us to ending prayer for them.
My thoughts before I attended my first bible study was that, I was going to study the bible. Same impressions of taking a course. Instead I found it to be more of social event between people. Somewhere people can gather outside the church functions, and compare ideology. I look forward to my next encounter.

    You Crackin' Me Up
Notes on a food meeting of Filipino Student Association

As I arrive at the Barbara Ying Center; I notice that there is no more parking spot for me near the main entrance, so I have to drive further south to get a parking space. The main entrance is pretty narrow and there are cars parking right on the driveway. And as I go in, I’m greeted by two FSA officers and they tell me all about the event that is about to take place inside.

I am new to the place. So I decide to look for the persons I know and there I find a guy I know. When I walk in the room, the setting is set up in a supper style, they have 3 long tables setting up parallel and seats are arranged along two sides opposite. I seat right in the middle and right in the front. Later two more guys walk in and it seems like they are brother. Then I open a conversation and get to know them personally. The guys ask me “Are you Filipino?” I reply “Do I look Filipino” he takes a moment to think then replies “No”, I think to myself that maybe I am the only Filipino here then reply “Right, wanna take a guess about my nationality?”. They takes a while to guess where I am from and it is like playing game and I finally confirm that I’m from Vietnam. So As I sit there, more and more people walk in. The officers sit tight at the back next to 4 baskets full of eggs. I’m confused as why they are selling so many eggs for. To satisfy my curiosity, I go down there to ask one of them about what the eggs are for. I pick the hottest chick in the group and talk to her, later I tell her about the project that I’m doing for my English class. From there, we exchange number and she promise to provide me the information about the activity of the group.

I soon find out that the eggs are part of a fundraising project of the Asian Student Association. I buy one egg and sit there to watch the activity. The meeting starts when the projector shows a skit of the officers showing how they take all the yolks inside the eggs and place the papers in them. After the video, the officers come up to the front and talk about when the next meeting will be and the basketball game that will take place after the meeting. The atmosphere of the meeting is very lively; everyone seems to enjoy it very well. After the officers step down, it is time for people to step up to the podium and talk about their own activity. I was pretty hungry at this point, and then the officer announces everyone that it is time to crack the eggs and find out what they get inside. Mine is a piece of paper that says “Thank you!” so I’m certain that I win nothing. The girl that sits next to me is lucky; she wins a $10 gift card to Chipole. After she finds out that she wins, she starts screaming across table in happiness and so I congratulate her with a little bit of disappointment.

Then it is time for the supper of the night. I get the chance to try Filipino food for the first time. There is a long line of people waiting to receive their portion and when it is my turn, I thank every officer who makes the food for me. The food is super delicious, there is a breast stick and a little bit of rice. Everything fit perfectly in my appetite. At the end of the activity, The people who help to cook the food sum up and talk about their next activity. I hear that the next one would be some time in the future.

Lastly, it is time for me to go home. I exit to the bathroom and get some water. There are still people talking inside and most are exiting to their parking lot. The officers who organize the event stay afterward to rearrange the desks and take out all the trash. Finally, I get to my parking lot with a sigh of relief that I didn’t get a parking ticket for parking without a permit.
