    1. The Forms of “Governments” and Effects on Poverty

We speak of government “fighting poverty” But biblically speaking, there are a number of types of government, and each has an appropriate sphere of responsibility. There is God’s sovereign government. There is self-government. There is family government. There is church government. There is community government. Lastly, there is civil government. How is poverty created or affected when these governments fail or break down? What can happen when governments, other than civil government, are healthy and vibrant? What happens when civil government suppresses or replaces other forms of government?

The essay I chose to discuss and analyze is labeled “The forms of “Governments” and Effects on Poverty”. I originally just blew off the topic. I did this because governmental discussions are not my strong suit. This specific essay contest has seven subtopics you can choose from. Each has it’s own specific slant towards inclusion of religion. When I looked further into the description of this subtopic, I was intrigued. The topic discusses government as being a set of common people controlled by a higher source. This refers to not only the elected government we have currently, but indicates a family as a form of government as well. In my opinion, this topic is discussing society in general. Most importantly, this essay must have an understanding of how society effects poverty lines within the certain “governments”. The essay discusses equality and reflects on suppression of those already in need. It interested me that the word government is tossed around so loosely. Almost just after reading them, the prompt ideas began to flow. In my opinion, this is a clear sign that this essay contest and its specific subtopic was the one I should choose to write about.

"Articulate with clarity an ethical issue that you have encountered and analyze what it has taught you about ethics and yourself."

I want to talk about a very common but serious issue that we have in the medical field. That issue is patient confidentiality. I have been in the medical field for roughly 6 months now as a nurse. In school, we’re taught that one of a patient’s basic rights is that of privacy. Patient information is only to be discussed with those who are directly involved with the care of that patient or those who the patient has signed a consent for the release of his or her information. Even when this is done, you are only to discuss the minimum amount of information needed. No more and no less. That being said, all too often I hear the medical staff gossiping or mentioning confidential patient information to each other or people that have nothing to do with the patient’s care. I feel that this is extremely inappropriate and I want to discuss my opinion, rules and policies, and what could be changed.

I want to read something deep. Something that changes me. I dare you.

The whole reason why I chose this essay contest was that I've been waiting to tell a very personal story for a long time now, and the constraints of this contest will allow me to do so. Quite simply this story is regarding my feelings towards my grandmothers passing 5 years ago and how I first reacted. This contest is worded not only in the form of a challenge to those submitting but also as the perfect venue to discus what happened to me. Also the listing of the prize of "Bragging rights" also enticed me to the contest. In my opinion good righting can't have a price placed on it, instead I'd rather have the reward of changing how someone views something and writing a piece that they'll remember for their whole life.

"What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever done?
Maybe, in the course of your life, you’ve had an Erin Brockovich moment: say, the time you stood up to a bully in second grade, or the day you ended a long-standing friendship that had turned toxic. Or maybe your acts of courage have been less dramatic but no less powerful: moving to a new country. Daring to fall in love a second time around. Leaving a settled career to embark on a risky new venture. Whatever your story, share it with us."

I choose to enter this contest because I feel that every day heroic events should be recognized. In this contest I get to discuss something heroic I've done, no matter how trivial it may be. I feel a personal story will be easier to write about because its creative and is covered by the blanket effect of crossing genres of writing.

Prompt: Write a personal essay that shows your interpretation of the phrase “Olympic Spirit.”
In recent years American’s Nationalism in the United States has sunken to an absolute low. I find this to be disrespectful because United States is the better if not the best one of the countries in the world. I selected this essay because the 2014 Winter Olympic Games are about to begin. This is will be a good source of nationalism that we desperately need. The Olympic Games are just more than the Athletes winning the gold. It is the time that citizens of nations show of their pride for their country. Also, the Olympics is a representation of world peace as the 5 rings symbolize each of the continents connected to each other. I believe that this should be stressed considering all the violence in the media news today. I felt strongly about the Olympics because my dad always watched the Olympics so I did as well. Memories that he and I share will allow me easily to make a personal connection to this prompt. This made me become a big fan of the Olympics and I think my fellow Americans should be too.

"Write about something you truly believe in, why, and how you live your life by that Principle."

We all have many principles we live by everyday. For some people this can be charity, it can be having fun, it can be taking chances, and many other things. I have many principles that I would love to make a whole essay on. My plan is to make a short and sweet principle, and expand on the topic to cover it more. I hope to win the contest by having a good principle to live by.

"Has the On Demand revolution and shift to consuming media online affected you positively or negatively as a student? How?".

This is a very interesting topic to express my opinion on the current issue which is the on demand revolution. This is a prompt that we all can relate to, and the best opinion and analysis will be chosen to win. Personally, I uses my computer a lot so I can easily tell from my experience how buying shows and movies online is more efficient and frugal than to watch it on TV. I like to expand my knowledge and express my opinion in the best way possible to win this contest. The way it goes I think the person with the most critical and logistic take on this issue will win, I want to see how my opinion will be valued in the current world, that is why I choose this contest essay.

"Promoting Sustainability and Conservation of Natural Resources"

Growing up around Agriculture my entire life really influenced me into choosing this essay contest. My grandfather had acres of land that he farmed corn and cattle, and understanding a little bit more about how we are conserving resources today. My hometown is a big contributor in fertilizer which is so closely regulated I would like to see how natural resources like Fossil Fuels are as well. The reason for this essay is a scholarship to a FFA member. Most young adults do not understand the severity of abusing Natural Resources. This essay is also informing students about the current issues that are impacting agriculture. Conservation of resources has been preached to us since we were introduced to Global Warming by Al Gore. So I would like to see what young adults think about this issue.

What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever done?

When I saw this essay contest, the question just really nagged at me. It made me really wonder and think out all the times I decided to be brave. All the other contests always seemed really boring and gave complicated prompts. I choose this contest because it was a simple question, straight to the point.

'What is the origin of complexity in the universe?'
The origin of complexity in the universe is a topic that scientists and researchers have contemplated since the beginning of man. To think of how big and complex the universe is, is something that leaves most people baffled. There have been theories brought forth such as religion, or the most popular the Big Bang Theory and different theories that could explain the origin of complexity like the Butterfly Effect .
I chose this topic because I wanted to do a science essay contest. I researched other ones, such as the DuPoint Challenge which was about sustainability and resources through science. That one did not interest me, then I came across this one. I think it will be interesting to write a paper on how the universe came to be so complex.

If you could teach everyone in the world one thing, what would it be?

I choose this essay contest because it challenges everything I know about writing. The contest has a cap of 300 words which means I have to get my point across immediately but while still being in-depth. The question they gave is also very interesting because it allows me to do some very deep inner mind thinking for what I truly believe could better the whole world. I am excited to see what I can come up with and how well I’ll be able to condense my idea while keeping the meaning.

"I want to read something deep. Something that changes me. I dare you."

Personally, I love to experiment with a challenge. Writing about something that is more in depth then your average essay allows for various opportunities on what to write about. Whether it be about a famous Greek philosopher who wrote about teachings of his master, or simply about what it means to truly live, depth brings discovery to both the writer and the reader. I'm eager to break those grounds. I plan to write about how music has an impact on everyone, as well as everything around the sound waves of the voices sung, and the guitars that played in a song. Life is influenced by the music they hear, and it gets people through hard times. It just seemed like an interesting thing to write about. I don't plan on winning the contest, I just want to get my thoughts out there. Music has impacted me in many ways and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

What do you do to make your community a better place? How has volunteering changed you and the way you view the world? Write an essay describing your experiences and be recognized for all that you do.

I choose this particular contest because I have spent countless hours performing community services. I have had many experiences that have affected me and my view points as well as myself. I think the problem I will face is explaining my experiences, being concise, how it changed me and my view point. I have so much to say and so much I have done. Choosing which experiences impacted me the most will be difficult because there are so many. I love performing acts of kindness and service, I've been doing it since I was very young. I just want people to know the value of doing service.

Write an essay about what your purpose in life is and how you think you will achieve it.

I have been searching essay contests for about two hours now and they have all appeared as boring topics, until I found this one. I chose this topic because it requires a much deeper thinking and I suppose that is what interests me. In this essay I will get to write about a much more important topic than just an average English assignment. I will be able to inform not only my instructor, but myself on what I think my purpose in life is and how I will achieve those goals.

How Did You Plan to Achieve Success in the Face of the Unknown?

This essay contest is from The National WWII Museum. This comes on the 70th anniversary of D-Day. I love history and my grandfather fought in World War Two, and my father is also military and he fought in Desert Storm. So history and military history definitely hits home for me. This is why I was drawn to an essay contest given by this war museum. I am supposed to explain how I plan to achieve success the the face of the unknown. This is the story of my life. I still do not know exactly what I am doing. I hope to have some deep thought for this essay and maybe come away with more than just a good grade.

What's the bravest thing you've ever done?

When I began looking for an essay contest that best suited me, I didn't exactly know where to start. Then, out of nowhere I spotted "The Sixth Annual Life Lessons Essay Contest". It intrigued me because not-so long ago I made a daring risk that i'd love to share. I'm excited to tell my story and reflect my thoughts on paper.

Describe a place or environment where you are perfectly content. What do you do or experience there, and why is it meaningful to you?

I believe that this is an important topic because it has the potential to bring my personality out into a paper which would make my time writing thoroughly enjoyable. This is also an important topic because this topic could dive into the topics of conservation and sustainability which, for some reason, many people today don't seem to care about today. I could first talk about my favorite spot in nature and why it makes such a content and relaxing feeling for me. I could then go on to talk about how, probably theoretically, if that natural spot was to be disrupted or even destroyed, what could be the resulting consequences. This would allow me to help people understand why conservation and sustainability of natural resources is massively important for the future of the planet. I feel like many people don't get it or just don't care; which is depressing to know that many don't care about the succeeding generations, and honestly, we all should.

On June 6, 2014 the world will celebrate the 70th Anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion to liberate Europe from Nazi rule. To commemorate the importance of this event, The National WWII Museum asks you to think about a time in your life where you have had to make important plans for success in spite of uncertainty. This year, The National WWII Museum asks: How Did You Plan to Achieve Success in the Face of the Unknown?

The contest I have chosen is an annual contest hosted by the national WW2 museum. The museum gives a prompt once a year, like the one above, in order to draw attention to history and give people some sort of connection to one of the most influential historical events for our country and the world. I chose this essay contest because I love history and this gives me a way to relate my life to something that I love. The prompt is also a door to many possibilities and I can see many ideas floating around in my head just writing this response.
